@lifning asked:

what's your favorite implementation of tetris (or what would your ideal implementation of tetris be)

Tetris Effect, played on a big screen in a dark room with the sound up and using a gamepad with a split directional pad.

The stage designs are absolutely gorgeous, the soundtrack is phenomenal, and the interplay of the audio, visuals, and gameplay inputs are laser-targeted for my particular dopamine buttons. But even putting that aside, the biggest thing the game absolutely nails is the pacing in the Journey mode. It's no longer a steadily-speeding-up game of endurance like every other version of Tetris. Instead the falling speed shifts up and down; challenging you for a while, then backing off and giving you some space to breathe. Up and down. Steadily growing faster as the campaign goes on, but in such a way that it induces that trance-like flow state without completely overwhelming you. It's immensely satisfying.

i love the pacing in te:c. i also love that the zone mechanic was really explored. it was pitched as a way for beginners to take a breath but it's also how experts rack up the points

i can't very well say it's the best tetris, but it feels like in the future every tetris will have the zone mechanic, much like how holding a piece, spins, and kicks ended up being "the way"
