This is going to be my fourth year of Destiny, and is the third expansion I've prepped for and anticipated. To reflect on that, I wanted to think not only about the builds I still needed to put together, but about my characters, about what I've seen in the game before, about what I like about my chars as OCs and not just Destiny gameplay vehicles. I also wanted to reflect on my favorite parts of lore and other characters in it.
I'm not great at details. I'm also not great at really mathing out the optimal setups to make builds work (I rely on other people and other tools for that - DIM unsurprisingly was heavily involved in the prep here). I don't say this to shit on my own builds when showing them off, just to frame this as what it is - a bet with myself that I'll enjoy these builds, and not immediately trash them on first contact with the legendary campaign or new nightfalls.
There's enough info to recreate the builds (if you have your symbols memorized) and some notes on them, but mostly there's just flashy visuals and some jokes. The main point of this is to have fun and look cool, which is often my goal in the game as well. They're definitely going to change on contact with the expansion to integrate armor mods, but there's the bones of something here, I'm sure of that much.
I didn't set out to tell any overarching stories with my fashion here. What I did set out is to loosely theme each build's fashion to the element, to draw from some of my favorite characters in the lore (ones who have recently featured, especially). I wanted to have each look stand out as something which, on its own, I think is Cool. I'm confident I succeeded, and I made sure the fashion was saved alongside the builds so I can run these looks going forward too, if I want.
Characters and factions that come up, if only a little: Rasputin, the Brays (/Europa/the DSC), the Black Armory, Ada-1, the House of Light, Saint-14, the Iron Lords, Lord Felwinter, Empress Caiatl, Queen Mara Sov and the Awoken, the Ahamkara, Eris Morn. Also guardians as a whole, with Warlocks, Titans, and Hunters all having some specific representation. This does not cover every character or faction I think is cool (Asher's left out, Sloane is only barely represented with a piece from her vendor set, there's more I can think of), but it is a solid slice.
These pages each have two pieces of art I've commissioned for my destiny chars. I wanted to show them off in context, as the full characters I've come to imagine them as. Developing them in my head, in bits of headcanon I spit off in discords unprompted, as characters whose motivations I idly think about sometimes, as characters who I use to grapple with Destiny's complicated and often morally muddy setting, has been a very rewarding part of the last couple years. Luné as always has top billing in my OC self-exploration project, but I get a lot out of comparing and contrasting with these three goofballs, too. Hoping to get some more art in future once I nail down what kind of thing I want next.
Not going to link them out here because doing it properly would bloat the page too much, but I endorse every artist (four separate ones) featured on the loadout pages. Check them out when they're open for commissions, you won't be disappointed.
This whole project's been a bit stream-of-consciousness, so I can't really be surprised this post also is that. Hope it makes sense and/or is enjoyable. More than usual I can't really endorse going to peek at the guts of my site - I wrote this in a weed-fueled haze last evening (and I needed another hour or so today), and I know I made some highly questionable structural choices. The builds also came out of a separate weed-fueled haze. But it was a fun project and I'm glad I did it. Self-hosted self-written website bullshit and 3D modelling are the two creative expression avenues open to me, and I want to take advantage of them whenever I can. Hope you enjoy!
