I suppose as an alleged 3D artist I should know more about this stuff. it helps that it's very cool.
I think the most interesting thing to me about the technology and the field is like, how it's all born out of tight constraints. even if you have the lowest hardware demand and the strongest PC imagineable, there's still stuff that would be a total waste to render and worth your time to cut out.
I do wish the industry existed in a different form and we got to turn this knowledge more to, like, "let's see if we can get titanfall 2 running on my old PC with a pentium 4" and less to "we gotta get 8k textures in here and get the puddle tech working or the gamers will scream". that too is a waste, of people and hardware and materials.
this is where you plug in "games that look worse made by people paid more to do less" or similar. which I broadly agree with even if chasing through all the consequences of that idea can sting. but my internal optimist likes to think with properly aimed (and treated) human ingenuity, not everything has to be tradeoffs.
