incredibly jazzed the mappings I use linux - > windows for samba, to cover characters windows can't display, also works in the reverse direction without extra settings. If I copy something from the samba share to windows, re-compress it, and send it back, it changes : -> ÷ -> : automatically. computers! sometimes good.

hidden in this comment is me slowly realizing I can dismantle the part of my process involving pulling things to windows in a staging dir, and sending them to a staging dir on freebsd before final storage. or at least most of that, it seems like something about my settings stops me from running the conversion batch file direct on network storage. but even doing transfers via windows explorer is very helpful.
