I do think there's fair concerns with digital games vis a vis preservation (and I have a bunch I don't even really have listed out between PS4, xbone, PS5, wii, and wii u). however, they at least delivered a compelling ease-of-install ease-of-play pitch. which is why I've been heavily on them all the PS4 gen on, and why my PS5 doesn't even have a disc drive (which I only regretted today, when I was trying to verify which Journey to the West special features were which and had to start up the disc to check).
comparatively, I tried using digital movies when I first started collecting blu-rays, and that experience has always sucked. they expire as stated, so you never get them used, and even if you buy new you risk not having them. you gotta sign up for one of a dozen goofily named services to use them, and (as I recall), the playback experience was terrible. this and the terrible BD playback situation on computers (which has not improved) is why I almost immediately learned to rip those discs.
also I AM going to find ways to preserve my digital games at some point. just need to learn my way around some more modern system emulators, and also come to terms with my game files starting to become Appreciably Large (compared to SNES/NES/GB which are basically nothing).
