like, a player coming into my game to fuck me over (which has consistently been the experience when it's happened) is a distinct thing from all the NPCs I'm fighting. it requires engaging differently, in a lot of these it seems to require different equipment, even. it doesn't let me build a story of "I came across something difficult, I learned its patterns, I overcame it" like I'm doing with the rest of the game. if the point is "yeah it sucks, it's telling a story about how it sucks".... I don't want that? that is not what the games are about for me, just pain with no improvement. I want to learn and grow. if other people want player randomness in their games, let them tick that on in the menu and leave me the fuck alone.

if I sound annoyed it's because this inevitably comes up in every souls space I'm in, and every time it does it's with the air of "no you don't GET it it's part of the POINT of the games, you aren't playing it right otherwise". or alternatively "you can opt out just ignore big chunks of the game or any other kind of player engagement, I don't get why you're complaining". it's frustrating.
