the one caveat I'd put on this is that with the current state of search engine technology and linux, while you can find what the settings were at one point, there's no guarantee that those settings still work or whether the entire subsystem that was configured by that setting has been completely replaced and now the setting lives somewhere completely different
I would argue windows comes out worse with the current state of search engines. But yeah, hard to guarantee you can look up anything right now.

a couple weeks ago I had to work with a friend of mine to get into the audio output settings, past the new restyled windows 10 audio output settings into the old control panel, and finagle all of their audio devices into the correct disabled/default states to get discord audio to work and it took like 45 minutes, despite knowing exactly what I was looking for
this is strong motivation to actually document how my systems (especially the fileserver's services and encrypted pool) are documented at least. from a "okay your boot drive just exploded but you have this file, go" perspective.
