my immediate family started doing "here's what I want" gift lists the last couple years, and as someone who is bad at figuring out what people want, especially people I'm not seeing on a regular basis, it's a godsend. works great the other way too because (though I almost always leave it a little late) I can come up with a couple of things I need and send a list out and get something useful.
