goblin seems so neat and like exactly what i might want, not as a replacement for cohost but for a place to do more long form stuff, but i just fucking can't because why the fuck does this also have a local/global feed. what the fuck is wrong with people. what is wrong with anyone running a fediverse that has this shit turned on and/or likes it.

"it's how i can discover posts or users" i don't care. i truly do not give a shit if you aren't curious enough to go poking at corners to find things. a "public timeline" has always been the number one source of harassment for the platforms it exists in because you're seeing everything in a single hose of content stripped of context and people looking for shit to get mad at have the biggest net to do it with. i have constantly been an outspoken hater of the Global Feed tag here because it defeats the purpose of this site's design re: dulling harassment vectors. anytime some truly stupid, evil, incomprehensibly dumb drama arose around this site, the global feed was always the source of it because someone would post some shit in there, often an attack at staff, and it would immediately ripple throughout the site through subtweets and heresay because a bunch of people who'd otherwise never see that shit and never feel the need to react to it would see it and feel the need to react to it.

it's why i refuse to go to any kind of mastodon-like thing, despite its obvious advantages over other microblogging alternatives. i cannot exist somewhere that has a feed where bad actors have a mcdonalds playplace to go wild in. i do not want to make thoughtful post where someone who has no active interest in seeing it can read it and interpret it based on the context of "i just saw this" instead of "i want to know what you have to say". "there aren't any nazis or TERFs" is not good enough for me because worse than that is puritanical crusaders who can easily fly below the radar of hate speech and TOS violations to pick apart anything they don't like. no transphobe has ever done as much damage to me as people who have jumped in my @s to say i was problematic to draw something i liked and put my heart into. i do not want to exist anywhere that actively enables behaviors like this and you cannot convince me that doesn't happen or the behavior isn't as bad as i think it is. i have seen it and i have waken up to some of the most awful shit ive ever read about myself and my loved ones over it, so kindly fuck off with telling me it's not that bad.

anyways. setting up a blog later today so i do have some place to longform if i feel the need to.

in reply to @erica's post:

I've been trying so hard not to get very mad at people responding to my lamenting the loss of cohost with "hey have you thought about [awful twitter 2.0 style alternative]?" for exactly this reason. Like, no; I quit twitter years ago because its brand of context-stripped drama cycle was actively harmful to my health. I don't want another version of it but with even fewer guarantees of effective moderation on assurances of "its better trust me"

i think we need to consider pillowfort. yeah, That One Guy was really weird about cohost, and a few people on there cheered him on, but feature and ethos wise i think it's the closest thing to what we have here.

Misskey and Mastodon both have a "don't post to local and global feed" option! you can change the default post visibility to "Home - Post to home timeline only" in Misskey (Settings > Privacy > Default visibility), and "Quiet public / unlisted" in Mastodon (Settings > Preferences > Other > Posting privacy)

Mastodon additionally has an explicit opt-out for all algorithmic recommendations for posts / profiles (disable Settings > Profile > Privacy and Reach > Feature profile and posts in discovery algorithms)

a per-user option isn't a bad thing but the problem is the feature in the first place. behaviours and cultures develop from what the default/norm is for all users. it's not just that i don't want my posts in there, i don't want it to exist at all because i do not want to be somewhere that has developed a culture around it.
