re-watching the first guy ritchie sherlock holmes because someone posted a meme edit of a scene, and I remember enough of the "here's how he did it" from near the end to start to see how you could in theory work it out live. I think there's actually enough information to do it in places, which is rare. even in sherlock holmes originally, the books are frequently the "this information we never gave you is the answer" about the mysteries, which I hate.

in reply to @lunemercove's post:

the specific things I've noticed

  1. you can see the water bubbling/boiling when the cult leader gets killed in his bathtub 1a) you can later see holmes checking for residue and complaining the water has been drained (which presumably would have made it even easier to detect the acid solution it became) 1c) as I recall it's something like "there was a powder added to the bath/piping to produce an acid solution which killed him"

  2. thinner but the second cult guy to be murdered does walk right past the lamppost shown later 2a) the reveal is "hey actually some of what he and you thought was water was flammable oil" 2b) you could in theory work that out before Holmes reveals it to you.
