I have a strong awareness of entropy in myself, in the world around me, and in the environment - the country - I inhabit. I am more confused about what to do with this awareness than ever; I simultaneously fear my own aging and try to combat every errant line under my eyes, but I dream of being an old woman someday. I fear the country getting less stable, but I also hope for whatever springs forth from what comes changes our world to be a better place.

I try to preserve objects that will decay, while simultaneously acknowledging that their return to the earth is beautiful in its own right.

in reply to @victoria-scott's post:

The trouble with "entropy" is that it's descriptively neutral. "Wear and tear" reflects use, it situates an object within a narrative and associates it with, if not people, then at least some function. "Decay" signals neglect, either some minimal narrative or even a withdrawal from having narrative substance. Just as treating an object as an investment interferes with its functionality as an object, subjecting an object to meaningful use is entropy gained in the course of story to which the object can claim a supporting role (and, in some cases, global entropy gained in order to reduce local entropy), whereas things falling apart as the mere encroachment of jiggling molecules, changing temperatures, and opportunistic organisms gradually siphons away an object's future potential to participate in stories of any kind.

I believe "entropy" is exactly the word we need, though. decay is its own narrative; do we not all age and die, regardless of how much we take care of ourselves? does this truck, tree through its engine bay, still lack the ability to tell a story?
