As usual, this is a monthly event in which Bandcamp waives their fees so that all purchases (minus a bit for Paypal, who have no interest in waiving any fees) go straight to the artist. Here are a few recommendations based on what I've been listening to!

—But first we should talk about BANDCAMP UNITED! Recently Bandcamp workers formed a company wide union and in response, Bandcamp and Epic promptly began union busting via arbitrary delays and worker exclusion. At this time, Bandcamp United have not called for a boycott or established a picket line, and explicitly encouraged people to continue to support artists via Bandcamp Friday (their own recommendations list is here, and is sick). Here's a link to their ally toolkit as it stands, in which they're calling for people to reach out to Ethan Diamond, Bandcamp's co-founder, and I encourage you to follow them on social media to keep abreast of how things are going. We are only as strong as the people standing beside us!

Time for Music!

Canto Ostinato, by Simeon Ten Holt, recorded by Erik Hall https://erikhall.bandcamp.com/album/canto-ostinato-simeon-ten-holt

Canto Ostinato is one of my all-time favourite minimalist pieces in which (usually) four pianists play intricate overlapping repeated patterns ad libitum - as many times as they want - which creates this beautiful waves of interlocking harmonies. Erik Hall's new recording of it for prepared pianos is so beautiful and a great introduction to the piece if you're not up for sitting through the original 1984 3 hour version.

Cadence, by Cinder Well https://cinderwell.bandcamp.com/album/cadence

Cinder Well has showed up on my recommendations list before - you might have heard No Summer - dark, dark pessimistic folk music. This is a preorder of their next album which, judging by the singles, is going to be fantastic. It releases at the end of this month and I think "doomy folk from the depths" is a perfect companion to an LA spring.

Oversight, by Geotic https://geotic.bandcamp.com/album/oversight

Released last Bandcamp friday, this "lost" Geotic album from 2011 was rediscovered by Will and edited for release. Gentle, melodic ambient music with the soft sounds of the live audience in the background. I love Geotic and discovering a complete album existed out there was a real treat.

Ichiko Aoba with 12 Ensemble (Live at Milton Court), by Ichiko Aoba https://ichikoaoba.bandcamp.com/album/ichiko-aoba-with-12-ensemble-live-at-milton-court

I haven't heard this one yet but the premise of the album is so good that I can share it unheard. I need to carve out some time to put on the big headphones and listen to Ichiko Aoba plus a 12 piece ensemble. It's going to be fantastic.

Habit, by Snail Mail https://snailmail.bandcamp.com/album/habit

An older album and not exactly unknown. One of my true great joys in life is sending music to my dear friend Keith and then him sending me music. Keith and I were talking about the new Boygenius and he said "have you heard Snail Mail," and I said "I've always meant to" and then he sent me this and it ruled. He also sent me a— hang on, I'll make it the next recommendation.

Drifting Feather, by Paradox https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnTjPlZA9c4

This is not a Bandcamp recommendation. It's a Polish jazz fusion album from 1971 and Keith sent it to me with almost no pre-amble. Keith regularly sends me the weirdest shit and every single time it rules. You should listen to this. The track "Uncle Leo's Intimate Life" is extremely chill and melancholy and "Do You Have Fresh Eggs, Or In Mrs. Bronka's Backyard" goes so hard.

Honey, by Samia https://samia.bandcamp.com/album/honey

This is Samia's second album after The Baby and is so well put together. The title track is simply: very good.

That'll do for recommendations this time around. What're you listening to? What're you excited about? Have I completely broken embedding here? It's time to hit the button and find out.

This is the first Bandcamp Friday since PALISADE launched, which means that if you've been waiting for the perfect time to pick up its soundtrack, this is it!

The PALISADE soundtrack is pay-what-you-want, and any future tracks will be added to the album for free as they're composed within the season. I am really looking forward to writing more. With each track I write I feel more and more confident about what the season is going to sound like, which happens every time, and is always a relief.

I think it's going to be a fun season. Come along!
