So tried out KSP2 a few days ago after getting gifted a copy, and it's... well, it's real rough as it stands, to the point that I simply uninstalled it. Actually launching a craft was near-impossible with my system specs, and a lot of pretty important stuff - such as, apparently, a drag model that takes fairings into account - is missing.

However, that's not what this post is about. My attempting it got a friend to try it for themselves on a much more capable rig, and they've done a much more thorough analysis, but that got both of us in the mood to play the original KSP - with plenty of mods, of course.

And that's caused me to look through my extensive screenshot folder(s), reflecting on previous missions, craft, and occasional tomfoolery. Here's a few highlights! (Details in image descriptions.)

Have some shots of a recent two-craft Eve mission!

The first craft is an orbiter, with multispectral, visible-light, and basic altimetry instruments on board. It's designed to make a map of the surface, identifying sites of interest on the surface below.

The second craft has two parts: an orbiting relay satellite, to provide long-range communications, and a compact lander to explore the surface.

And turns out, the Parallax mod adds quite the ground scatter to Eve!

Kerbal 1 still has so much life, i agree with Kav that kerbal 2 is the best marketing tool they've had for kerbal 1 in a while lmao

the only reason i'm not loading it up right now is because i'm annoyed about the way i potentially fucked up another moho mission, not knowing how to correctly execute this maneuver

whew boy, I've got quite the list, but I'll try to trim it down to essentials!

For a sort of "Stock+" experience:

  • ReStock (part model/texture overhaul, makes things look far more consistent)
  • ReStock+ (adds "missing" parts, as well as a lot of the Making History DLC ones, all in the ReStock style)
  • Docking Port Alignment Indicator (pretty much what it says on the tin)
  • MechJeb (autopilot & manuever-planner, reduces the tedium of launches)
  • Kerbal Engineer (super useful stat readouts)
  • RCS Build Aid (makes assembling vessels that can translate w/o rotating much easier)
  • Waterfall (engine plume/flame overhaul, more performant and much better-looking)
  • An assortment of other small QoL mods that would probably double the size of this list

For a more in-depth modlist without getting too wild:

  • the Near Future suite (adds all sorts of stuff, from bigger trusses to more solar panels to new command pods to nuclear reactors)
  • Kerbal Atomics (more nuclear engines!)
  • Heat Control (more radiators!)
  • Stockalike Station Parts Expansion Redux (more station parts! including big centrifuge ones)
  • Cryo Tanks & Cryogenic Engines (adds hydrolox & methalox fuels & engines)
  • Environmental Visual Enhancements & Astronomer's Visual Pack (super super nice visual effects)

Yeah, fingers crossed it gets better, I'd love to see it succeed

(as for those sorts of mods, Far Future Technologies seems to be the most straightforwards? At least, the System Heat system isn't too overwrought, and has an integrated heat-simulator in the VAB so you can see if you've got enough radiators)
