i have a pathological hatred of wires and see no reason headphones that aren't specifically for Audiophile Purposes should have them, and accordingly i haven't used a wired pair since like 2005. unfortunately this means that when they wear out, i have to figure out what the current Least Bad Thing on the market is. last time it ended up being these

i tested every wireless headset in stock at best buy and found that they all had severe issues in terms of audio quality (I'm not that picky, but half of them were unlistenable), mic quality, fit (owww hurty), receiver distance, driver quality, or controls.

the hyper-x cloud flight s headset hit every single mark. it had the longest receiver distance by a country mile; they basically work everywhere in my house, even three stories up from my basement office. the audio quality IMO is excellent. the mic is middling but you don't get "good" on a computer headset. it has built in volume and mic mute controls, with a mute LED on the mic, which also unplugs if you really want to be sure. the battery lasts for eons, and the drivers are completely unobtrusive. they're so good, I bought a second pair just for the office.

but the most interesting feature about them, one i refuse to live without ever again, is that they actually offer two separate audio channels, called "chat" and "game". you can have Discord, Teams, etc. use the chat channel, which is mono and lower quality (to save radio bandwidth) while everything else on your machine uses the game channel, and then you can fade between them on the headset.

so if you have a stream or a game going while talking to someone and you need to listen up for a moment, you can reach up and tap a button on the left earpiece and it turns down one so you can hear the other. this isn't an exclusive feature, more and more companies are implementing it; my previous headset was a Steelseries where they called it ChatMix, for instance.

this is such a brilliant concept, and it should have been available 20 years ago. they could have made wired headsets that just had a potentiometer fader and two separate plugs for audio input, and you could have bought a second cheap sound card just to bind teamspeak to. glad it's available now because we Deserve it.

I've been using a Steelseries for the past ~3 years now and I had to get a new headset recently and I realized that if I had to live without chatmix (or an equivalent) it would be hell. it's become non-negotiable for me unfortunately
