you can say "chimoora" instead of "cow of tailed snake" if you want. its a good pun.
i ramble about aerospace sometimes
I take rocket photos and you can see them @aWildLupi
I have a terminal case of bovine pungiform encephalopathy, the bovine puns are cowmpulsory
they/them/moo where "moo" stands in for "you" or where it's funny, like "how are moo today, Lupi?" or "dancing with mooself"
i'm really hoping the Collective Screech causes them to back off, since we seem to be at the same level of backlash as the NFT shit, but they may already be past the tipping point where that keeps working. idk. i think i've been a part of shouting Patreon down from at least like 5 bad decisions since ~2016, but i hate that this is how it works, company makes terrible self-destructive decision and we all have to scream in order to not be lit on fire along with them lol
it is. i'm tired of having to pick up and move my online presence somewhere else every few years. not looking forward to the part of this where i'm between Discord and Wherever Everyone Else Goes trying to gently convince the holdouts... all of us knowing that it'll happen again in a few years anyway UUUUUUUUUGHHH god.
finally, i have collected my friend groups and people i talk to on the new platform after years and we're all settled in
PLATFORM: we're making everything else super shitty and worse
well, time to lose half of my friends again as some people decide to leave, others stay, and some just vanish!
Maybe they'll use an AI to try to sell you NFTs of your username? Shit, I'm gonna give em ideas saying that...
Also like, how many fucking people are out there just adding friends directly based on a username they're being verbally told in a one-time chance meeting with no way of further communication if the discord friend request fails?
Literally no human being uses discord that way.
This feels like one of their investors said "I don't understand the username and discriminator business, you should make it more like Twitter" and everything else is a post-hoc justification.
Or worse, that they're doing this BECAUSE it creates 'intrinsic value' for accounts.
someone commented that a friend's discord account got targeted/hijacked because it had an "early supporter" badge and posited that the same shit is going to happen here with short names, just like it did on every other service where your username is real estate
As much as we clowned on nintendo's friend code shit, that is also an easy answer for all of this. Hell, Steam now automatically generates an 8 digit numerical code for easily adding people because of the way steam names work. There's so much easier, user friendly solutions to "friend name is hard to share/input" that people have been doing for years and years.
What annoys me is the best discord alternatives I know of are:
irc which I will never get Normal People to join
Matrix which I don't mind using but literally couldn't get to install right on my server to self host
Guilded which I was actually really impressed by as a chat platform but it's owned by Roblox so there's no way in hell it'll fare any differently than discord so why bother
