I have a terminal case of bovine pungiform encephalopathy, the bovine puns are cowmpulsory
they/them/moo where "moo" stands in for "you" or where it's funny, like "how are moo today, Lupi?" or "dancing with mooself"
You could try piping dd through gzip, if it's unused the empty space might actually be empty so gzip will compress it to nothing, or it could be full of test patterns from the manufacturer in which case it won't work all that well.
just noting that something like pv /dev/sdd > gzip -c might be faster than using dd due to block sizes. though using dd with a block size of 16k should be way faster than the default of 512 bytes (which is really tiny) in any case. furthermore, (l)bzip2 and zstd provide better compression ratios than gzip, and shouldn't cause any significant slowdowns. though, YMMV depending on your setup
the only explanation for this number of partitions is "the specific set of just-out-of-code-grindschool junior devs wd hired for two weeks had never heard of a 'folder' before"
But they somehow picked up that “partition tolerance” was a good thing, and ran with it
