I'm a heavy Twitter user, have been for years; you can trust me on what I say here. I'm making an effort to use Cohost differently. Many of the parts of myself I express on here are ones I don't have a chance to express on Twitter.

take a while to look around, get a sense of the feeling, the gestalt of the site. how people talk and behave. this place is different, and we should all be mindful of it. it's healthier. people on here are kind. I'm not sure I've seen a single attempt to dunk on another Cohost user.

no snowflake is responsible for the flood. the activation queue helps, and the different mechanics of the site help. but we must all do our own part to prevent Eternal September from coming to Cohost.

much of Twitter culture is unhealthy. take a deep breath, consider how you and others act on there. consider the parts of the culture that you might intentionally choose leave behind, for your own sake and others'. this is not an Exodus in which we must carry your whole culture with us on our backs, though we can certainly bring the good parts.

be conscious of your behavior. be kind. give folks the benefit of the doubt. Unlike much of Twitter, Cohost is not a battle. It is more like a community garden. Take care not to tread on the plants; many of them aren't in containers, and the paths aren't bordered by stones. Carelessness can easily crush things that we would not want to kill, were we aware we were doing so.

it is also important that we, as cohost users, welcome people to the garden. It's a lovely place, and people should enjoy it, and feel welcome to start their own plots, as long as the mint stays in containers, and they aren't spraying Roundup everywhere.

The #1 thing I’ve noticed here is that there’s way more space to share things that are fun or make you happy here. The engagement doesn’t reward you unconditionally so you gotta get your own dopamine.

I really need to figure out the new shitposting meta; the power of in-post CSS really changes the game.

The engagement doesn’t reward you unconditionally so you gotta get your own dopamine

this is exactly what I've felt but haven't been able to put into words. it's one of the best parts of this site

“ I gotta get my own dopamine here“ is definitely why I have such a good time swooping in to people I don’t really know and only just took a look at the blog off and leaving kind comments.

The engagement doesn't reward you unconditionally so you gotta get your own dopamine.

Holy shit, what a great way of putting it. I love that. That said, the "new shitposting meta" seems to be making fun (in a light-hearted way, not a mean-spirited way) of Eggbug, from what I've seen.

I agree to all. This is a very thoughtful place 💖

Also: as long as the mint stays in containers 🤣 I see you have had the experience of mints attempting to (and sometimes succeeding) to conquer everything as well x3

That Aaron Bady thread is funny to me because so much of Twitter culture came from a gradual SomethingAwful exodus and everyone who was on SA absolutely carried with us all the best SA in-jokes like "do you have stairs in your house" and the fucked up house and [USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST]. People still love all the old emoticons and bring them with them everywhere. They're like old recipes scrawled in cursive yiddish that your grandmother tried her best to translate into English and maybe you have to tweak them because it's easier to get beef than goat here and not everywhere sells buckwheat grout but you make do.

Nobody is going to forget about Meltdown May any more than HELLDUMP or TOXX; but just like how we grew out of HELLDUMB, we'll grow out of Meltdown May. We'll grow out of being antagonistic towards one another in the same way we grew out of being antagonistic towards ourselves in that goonish way of self-deprecation being seen as a virtue.

i am upset i cannot re-post a comment, this is a great one.

my only add here is: i hope for once we have finally Created A Website that isn't goonish, channer, nor twitter or tumblr.

this place needs to be a fourth site, and something where we leave the unhealthy of our adolescence-of-past baggage at the door.

I haven't figured out what I'm going to use here for outside of casual reviews of stuff I like, since that takes a while to write and I don't want to just be posting once a month or whatever, but once I get into a rhythm of it I suspect I'm going to be using here more and twitter less even if by some miracle the bird survives.

I saw someone post here and said, "If you are coming here from Twitter, please do not act like a Homeowner's Association." I think that's a great way to put it.

I like the vibe I see here, and I really hope that the site thrives and that it gets through its growing pains without too much heartache. I definitely want to get a premium subscription here if the vibe stays like it is right now - I would really love to see this site succeed.

Y'know, something else about this occurs to me: in addition to not "dunking", we should make more liberal use of comments just... y'know... for the sake of commenting and engaging. You can't like replies, and the number of likes and shares on the original post isn't visible, which means ratios aren't a thing here. And that's good - too many of us got wrapped up in that kind of "engagement" on twitter.

I do find myself increasingly 'browsing' here more often. I read, I scan, I spend time actually 'engaging' instead of trying to actively trying to manuever with constant mental spam that starts to turn into a downward spiral of noise. It's taking time to wean myself away from twitter's patterns and behavioral manipulation, but it's slowly getting there.
