ok why is every youtuber sponsored by a personal carbon offset company now. how do personal carbon offset companies have that kind of marketing budget. don't you have carbon to be offsetting

more recently i've seen multiple youtubers sponsored by like. data broker opt-out services. and idk if i'm being entirely fair when i say that raid shadow legends ads feel like less of a scam. the whole thing has timeshare exit company energy, to me

I can't speak for youtube, but it turns out a lot of carbon offset stuff is what turns out to be, essentially, green power generation venture capital, but with people buying offsets paying the investment companies, and project success nowhere near a guarantee no matter how much carbon they generate with the concrete they pour before their failure.

well, with the money you give them to offset carbon, they'll use it to bring in more people who will pay to offset carbon, and then that money will bring in more people who will-what do you mean this feels like a pyramid scheme? this is totally legitimate business

in reply to @cactus's post:

they're mostly youtubers affiliated with nebula, who, among other things, coordinate sponsorships to, in theory, stop youtubers promoting a scam they weren't aware of (see established titles) and make sure the sponsors aren't arseholes and also pay a fair rate.

wendover productions (who did a big video on how carbon offsetting is a scam) seems to trust wren (the most common offsetter sponsor i see) so they're probably the most okay? but i also see very little point in paying for "carbon offsetting" when it'll get erased by a coal mine in 20 seconds

i don't quite know if data broker opt-out services would do anything (the bigger issue is the 16 data breaches my old email was in) but they're not available in my country1 so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  1. probably since we dont have great data protection regulations

ahhhhh i didn't know nebula was also doing mcn things, that'd explain it.

there are probably parallels between wendover productions sponsored by wren and tom scott sponsored by nordvpn, but i'm not sure how much that actually means. aside from the fact that "the youtuber who made a video about how most of our industry is bullshit lets us sponsor them" probably costs extra
