realizing that, in the past, I've tended to be critical (in the critique sense, not the "ugh this place sucks" sense) of any given social media website I'm using, and that of the five currently relevant ones I can think of (Twitter, Cohost, Bluesky, Tumblr, Mastodon/the Fediverse) cohost feels like the only one where being critical of the website might lead to positive change in any way

the big corporate ones are big corporate and the federated ones, in a lot of instances, are too constrained by their own technical choices to change various things in a positive fashion

in reply to @atomicthumbs's post:

I think that's one of the things that makes me want to see this place succeed. It feels like this place is headed somewhere, unlike most corporate social media things, which just feel like they're full of make-work random changes that only exist to justify having thousands of employees.

very funny watching bluesky bake things that were disastrous for twitter (like "you can stalk other users' interactions on the site, even likes and blocks") directly into the protocol. rakestepper moment

That small team thing though is a double edged sword. It can give a bit of optimism and hope and whatnot, but if the changes you want don't come, whether it be policy or product, it can feel worse, I'd imagine. With a big corporation you can chalk it up to any number of things and shrug.

I feel you should always be direct and vociferous about your complaints, but humane towards the people who have to receive them; I find this applicable regardless of the web site in question.
