The accessibility request from last year languishes in the planning phase while the sexy audio post feature goes from request to implemented and rolled out in a month.

And this is just my biggest accessibility issue with the site. It's also one that's extremely small scope compared to some others neglected in the support forum. (Not to diminish the need for the other accessibility features either, which should be implemented even if they require more effort.) What does it take to get some of this feature energy directed toward improved accessibility?

Like, I get that they're a small team. It's this prioritization that makes me sad. To use the wheelchair ramp metaphor, it's seeing all your friends recommending their cool leftist co-op grocery. But the Walmart has a wheelchair ramp while the co-op has stairs. Meanwhile, your friends are implying that there's something wrong with the moral compass of anyone shopping at the Walmart for any reason...or, when you try to bring it up, responding with incredulous anger. "What do you mean this place feels hostile to your needs? They support trans people!"

As proven by the kerfuffle a while back over the limits on NSFW content, Cohost Staff does hear when the users speak out in numbers, and can implement changes nearly immediately when they feel pressured. This isn't to suggest Staff are otherwise lazy or bad or intentionally not working on these features, but they do have a lot on their plate, with an absolutely booked workday every day - hell a lot of the time just keeping the site up and running can eat up an entire day, not even making progress on any changes or features. Which just means that we need to make our voices heard clearly and assertively and it will break through the noise and make Staff realize that this is something that needs to be knocked up the priority ladder.

Yeah...

More generally, I have come to hate the phrase "minimum viable product," because in web development that inevitably means a website that isn't viable for a bunch of disabled people. None of the major frameworks, companies, boot camps, or degrees focus on accessibility, so it becomes something "extra" to make web sites actually useable for a sizable portion of the population.

in reply to @aetataureate's post:

The fact that they implemented Audio uploads with no volume slider, even when they went in and did bug fixes it wasn't even mentioned, shows how little certain forms of accessibility are considered. We didn't even need audio uploads, for that matter, it seems even more IDK awkward knowing that they implemented audio uploads shortly after the financial report stating they're hurting for money. The site doesn't need something that hits their storage and bandwidth even harder.

Implementing something that would allow us to just pick our own interface colors wouldn't cost their servers more money and would benefit everyone. Functionality changes/fixes may not be exciting but they benefit the ease of use of everyone and shouldn't be side-stepped for cool-sounding ~new features~.

i saw that while browsing. people asked for volume and site leadership was like "nah these other sites don't do that so why should we?" which is a really shitty position to take as leadership of someone claiming to want to do things differently hahah

Are you stating that as an actual summary of what they said or hyperbole? If they actually said something to that effect, that is... so exhausting =_= Even default html media embed comes with a volume slider. (And you know what happens with those other services that don't have a volume slider? I don't use the audio!!)

it's a summary but i did boil it down! here's the official post:

"We shipped without volume controls because while doing a survey of major platforms that support audio uploads, we found that the majority do not have volume controls. This includes:

  • tumblr
  • bandcamp
  • discord

That said, we're looking into a good way to implement this. As a temporary workaround, we suggest using a per-tab volume control extension."

Ahh TY for the quote
But this is hilarious because.. Discord absolutely has a volume slider lol... And I feel like saying 'well Tumblr doesn't have it' is a very... sad look. And frankly, Bandcamp not having a volume slider is one of my BIGGEST gripes about the service. More services have a volume slider than don't have one, in my experience. But that's very disappointing.

yeah. people who are interested in things other than accessibility are defensively enthusiastic about leadership here, but for me, following accessibility features, they seem to just do regular corporate silence or excuses for those.

in reply to @pendell's post:

people have been clearly and assertively asking for these things for, in some cases, up to a year. That's not the reason staff has not done almost anything for accessibility in that time.

in numbers. we need to demand it in numbers. one or two people making a post about it once a month isn't going to break through the noise of every single user on the website all asking for their own separate things.

all right. the alt text improvement request has 49 votes, on a forum where the most popular request ever has just 79. they've planned or implemented ones that have as few as 21. i hope your enthusiasm for this issue sustains and you keep posting about it, but it's not new and it does have numbers. staff has made a choice not to do these things, and to me that's an important part of this issue.
