I know there was an entire generation of people who were taught that the way to get hired is to "get your foot in the door" by finding personal people to email, etc, 'showing initiative' whatever and I can't stress enough the degree to which this strategy has the opposite effect on me when a stranger's cover letter arrives in my personal non-company email inbox on the weekend while I'm trying not to think about work
