and it's incredibly invasive! "clips" are exactly what they sound like, short snippets of a stream that the streamer in question can save and share. the catch is:

  • it captures both stream and call audio, so anyone in the call will have their voice recorded
  • it's enabled by default "if [the streamer's] system has high end hardware"
  • there is no way for users to opt out of being recorded, nor are there any settings for server admins to turn them off (per-channel or per-server)

which feels like a privacy violation! to constantly have your voice recorded and saved at any time, if a single person has a feature enabled, feels like a massive invasion of privacy. i get that it's not incredibly hard to capture call audio anyways, but it's at least a crime to do so in many US states (without two party consent, of course). this shit is ridiculous. i maintain two different servers that i frequently hang out in and the fact that i can't disallow all calls to be recorded is, kinda scary! kinda sucks a lot!

i know this whole platform's kinda been on the descent for a long time now, but i feel like this steps over a line that i didn't even think had to exist. i haven't seen anyone talk about this, and i'm not sure what the best method to approach it is, but for now: if you use discord, disable clipping. to do so, go to settings, and there (might) be a tab titled "clips" - click that and there's an option at the top to enable clipping, turn that off if you can. this fuckin sucks

So this is like Twitch clips except Discord isn't a freaking streaming platform and shouldn't be adding random features from every other app and failing at most of them? Hell

while i understand Technically They Could Just Record You Anyways, i do feel the ease (and default!!) nature of just always recording is a icky idea at minimum

i can't imagine they didn't sneak this into their terms of service + privacy policy, which of course nobody reads (and even if they did, it's not like they'd question a line mentioning "recording and storing your voice" given that, yeah that's kinda how voice calls work). still, it's definitely questionable at best considering that you could potentially record dozens of people at once, with nothing but a tiny indicator in the corner of your stream mentioning it
