This is a hot take but it's hot like salsa in that it's good, correct, and should be used in everything.
the only issue here is that sometimes ppl will make :3 into a ligature that centers the colon, which looks nice but also makes using emoticons with parenethsis somewhat awkward looking. also sometimes lopsided :3 looks better than centered :3, although this depends on font a lot
