EDIT: To clarify, I'm pretty sure this only affects the member post feature, not the creator posts. Member posts are already dumb, they're basically a little forum for your patrons to talk to each other. it sucks and I can't imagine anyone actually wanting it, it's just been possible to ignore up until now. This will make it a much bigger pain in the ass.

the degree to which these people want to be relevant as something more than a turn key for payment processors, a third party patch to their inexplicable lack of a recurring payment feature, is just pathetic. i don't even like the community posts feature but I'm going to turn the fucking thing off if they try to make this an inexplicable replacement for discord, a thing I already experimented with and gave up on because I don't want to be in charge of another fucking community with all the problems that come with that. Now they're going to force it on me? They're going to force me to run a fucking public discord? Fuck this sideways.

No, the member posts thing is basically a weird little forum where your patrons can all talk to each other. I honestly can't remember if it can be turned off, I feel like I would have done so if i could have. At any rate, I mostly just forget the fucking thing is there, but this will make it impossible to ignore

lmao they saw how many Patreon rewards are just “get a discord role/access to the server!” and decided to cut out the middleman! and since it’s Patreon I’m sure this will go SWIMMINGLY

It's the same reason they tried to become a video host, as if they can somehow compete with YouTube. Literally nobody wants that, and Patreon cannot possibly replace the decades of work that YouTube has put in to their viewer, their comment system, or anything else. Patreon video can't even connect to a Chromecast, and you can bet they're never going to fix that, certainly not with the reliability of YouTube. Everything I have ever tried casting with that wasn't YouTube was an unreliable piece of shit. They cannot possibly hope to compete, but they're going to try to make themselves the protagonist despite everyone vocally saying they don't want that, and then they're going to go out of business out of spite despite being perfectly profitable, because they aren't infinitely profitable, and leave us all holding the fucking bag.

I like how until very recently, patreon would add you to every single available discord you were eligible for every time the sub renewed, with zero granularity. Last I heard they did allow you to say you don't want to be force joined to a given server, but I heard it was still buggy. I stopped linking things to my discord well before that.

Any plans to set up a subscribestar et al?

As always, with every single Exodus on every single website in history, as I have been observing since I was 12, there is no sense in leaving until I am literally forced off the site, because at any given moment there is only one website everyone uses, and this is it. If I go anywhere else, I will get a hundred bucks a month tops and have to close my YouTube and get a day job again. People are unwilling to sign up for a second site unless the first site goes away, and even then, I can't expect to get more than 10% of my patrons back. "Just leave" has never been a viable option for anyone whose income depends on a service.

I know all the tech companies do shit like this for dumb exponential growth pursuit reasons, but patreon's insistence on it is so confusing.

lots of companies fuck with their product to try to make money, but patreon's whole fucking thing is making money. they're a classic middle man - they could just lean back, maintain a working platform, skim off a few percent, and be totally fine. but instead, they constantly mess with a good thing because maybe some day they'll be the next Apple or wherever the fuck.

as someone who has worked with many people who run successful "marketing discords", i do not understand this desire at all and i think it's one of the worst things you could possibly do. you surface yourself to so much intimate fan vitriol and for fucking what? for a couple more preorders from psychotic 13 year olds? what are we doing this for
