is how literally every single time I have ever opened geforce experience, which i do solely in order to get a driver update in two clicks instead of ten, i am logged out

i played your stupid fucking game, i signed up for your inane tracking cookie marketing bullshit, and I STILL GET FUCKED

given that EVERY SINGLE TIME I LOG INTO ANYTHING it involves a password reset flow, and given that this is true for EVERYONE because of the 20 year old security advice that EVERY SINGLE MEGACORP blindly follows even though it's counterproductive at best, that means that getting a driver update through geforce experience - the only thing anyone has ever opened the app for - is a 20-click process. so why would i EVER DO IT

these dumb fucks had WON. they actually got me to install their shitty stupid software, and then they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. this was SO EASY to get right. this was SO EASY. this was FREE.

also very good how the website requires you to select your model from 6 different dropdown boxes, and then gives you: the same file. it's all the same file. they've had a unified driver since 1998. nobody left at the company was working there when they had separate drivers. i'm not sure they've ever had separate drivers.

I remember when they did, and it was a long time ago, cause I remember having to roll out the right chipset drivers for deploying CAD stations with different GeForce 2 cards. It was, iirc, fixed after the release of the GeForce 3 series in 2001. I have friends that weren't fucking born yet!

in reply to @cathoderaydude's post:

Yeah I’m pretty sure that back in the GeForce256 days there were a couple different drivers to choose from. Back when you counted bytes on downloads and installs, and when the concept of a non-accelerated card existed.

Nvidia drivers sometimes drop support for older chips, even though they're still out there in huge quantities and being sold as new by OEMs. the company I was working for until recently was still shipping new PCs with GeForce 710 GPUs in them, even with those of us in the support team explaining why this was a bad idea, and when Nvidia dropped support for them in a recent driver series (while keeping support for the 750s because they're actually a different architecture) we had a really shit few days

this reason for having you choose your specific GPU model is, of course, also Nvidia's fault

I hear this from literally everyone and I'm always confused by it because, get this, across every PC I've had since GeForce Experience has existed, every windows install, I log in once, and it never logs me out, ever. I use shadowplay very often. Maybe that's what it is? Maybe other people are not letting it run in the background, just opening it once in a while for a driver update? I dunno man

I've had the site try to "intelligently" give me a different (older) driver version if I pick the right magic combination of OS and GPU model. Unfortunately, what they actually give me in such a case is the very last version of the driver that supports the card in question, where it's a crapshoot if it'll install on the version of the OS I picked, and even if it works, it's practically guaranteed to make the card perform about 90% worse than whatever driver was contemporary when the card was still relevant.

They'll give me version 90-point-something if I tell it I'm using a TNT2 in Windows 98. If i want playable frame rates in anything whatsoever, the version I actually want is version 4-point-something.
