Like, seriously. Most of what we use electricity for is Thing Do A Spinny. Fans, shavers, blenders, speakers, optical drives, toothbrushes, hard drives, vacuum cleaners, and more. We need a way to carry rotational motion from a central source to every point inside a house.

I have never heard of "friction" before. What is this. Are you telling me that

my family's house does and it worked really well, you didnt have to stop constantly to throw away whatever you sucked up because it all got collected in a container in the garage.
i used to put my lego people in there and have them get violently sucked down the tube

My stupid hill that I will die on is that we need to make a standard family of "household power take-off" spline interfaces and then ban putting motors in consumer products. I already have a system for outputting regulated 0-1.5kW of rotary force with RPM compliance from 0-8000RPM (angle grinder, food processor) and I don't see why I should have a bunch of smaller, underpowered, failure-prone mechanical energy sources tightly integrated into every other household tool. Literally just needs a clutch in the powered equipment.

I suspect the failure modes for this kind of system in natural disasters or construction/renovation screw-ups would be substantially more spicy than those of electricity.

That, and, for example, carrying rotational force through a cable flexible and light enough to use in something like a toothbrush or hair dryer, and then having a gearbox in the end device that can get it to the right speed, all while keeping it light enough to be useful, seems like it'd be difficult.

Practically, I don't want mechanical power distribution as much as I want a standard power pack interface, so that I can just slot an appropriate electric motor/driver combo unit into my small to medium appliances. The motor unit would have to be somewhat overbuilt to cope with the speed/torque range required, but you'd need fewer of them, so it might come out equally expensive. I envision a keying/electronic interlock system so that the powered device can request a given torque/speed profile from the power pack.
