something i think about more than i have any reason to in that category of "problems(?) i can't do anything about" is "if donkey kong 64 only requires the expansion pak because of a crash bug rare didn't have enough time to hunt down and fix when playing without one, why haven't rom hackers gone to the trouble of patching this bug themselves and making it expansion pak free?"

and i reckon the jury's still out on that one

The main reason is that there is no such bug. There was, but it was fixed before release. The game really just does need that much memory.

The other reason is there's basically nobody interested in physical N64 games who doesn't have an Expansion Pak.
