The word "wholesome" leaves negative space around it that defines "degenerate" without naming it. It's purpose it to exclude, to build a fence around "good" and keep the riff-raff out. It's the concept of "purity" with an air freshener hanging off.
damn, this really put a name to why "wholesome" makes me so uncomfortable, other than the fact it's a mormon lexical staple
edit: you know, thinking about it a little more, i guess context is everything. i know there's a good lot of indie devs out there who use "wholesome" as a signifier that a game is just, like, chill and cute and cozy. i know there are people out there who look for that as a sign that a given piece of media isn't going to surprise them with slurs or bigotry. is my discomfort with the word probably tinted by religious trauma? yeah, probably. aware now of my bias, do i think it's a word that is particularly useful? not really. i enjoy games that would be called "wholesome", but i don't think it's very meaningful or descriptive of things i look for in games.
