non-furries will constantly be like "now hang on, isn't an alligator furry technically a scalie? and what's the word for a bird furry" and meanwhile no furry in at least this millennium has ever given a shit about actually enforcing any kind of distinction
in my experience the birds (and griffins!) often flock together with us scaled critters, but all that is far from much of an extant "community". Being a scaled critter is just a quiet "eyy another one" sort of smile-and-nod bond
