youtuber hot take: i really loved ceave's videos when he was talking about complicated mario maker contraptions and whatnot, but i just don't really care for his evolution into a longform gaming video essayist. i don't really know what it is and i haven't watched much of his video essay work, so maybe it's just a kneejerk reaction, but i just don't vibe with it. idk

maybe it's his over-reliance on the cheeky little essay writing trick where you're like "but first we have to go on this tangent to explain this seemingly random, unrelated topic" and then you eventually tie it back in to the subject of the video like it's gonna blow the audience's mind. you know, the "but before we can talk about the problems with sticker star, we have to discuss the assassination of the archduke franz ferdinand" trick. i don't think he's as good at that as he thinks he is

I agree. I watched the first couple of video essays for his second channel but his critiques felt kinda shallow. Like his main problem with Totk is basically the same as his problem with Mario Maker 2: he doesn't like the controls. That's not literally his only point, but it's still a 96-minute video anyway and it really seems like that was his main impetus for it - he spends most of the time beating around the bush with those tangents like you said.
