The EU's occasional moves to protect the public from US tech companies' more egregious behaviour are a lot less impressive when considered in their economic and geopolitical context. They're… …largely just trying to make sure EU companies don't get entirely steamrolled by better-funded US companies in a way that won't threaten their broader military and "soft" power cooperation when it comes to screwing over the rest of the world.
So, basically, that means putting up regulatory obstacles that technically apply to EU and external companies, but which are aimed at the (indefensible) established business practices of US companies.
With sick and disabled people physically and psychologically distanced from them, people who are well and non-disabled have detached themselves from the immorality of their own behavior. "Return to normal" frames indifference to suffering as a morally neutral position and public health as a matter of personal preference. But there is no neutrality in the individual actions that comprise public health; they either cause harm or prevent it. Segregating the "unfit" from the "fit" is not a matter of debate. It is an abomination and a core tenet of eugenics.
I was completely floored by going to see my doctor in person the other month and nobody there being masked anymore, like, this shit is clearly not over; if anything since the WHO declared it "no longer a pandemic (but endemic)" I've had many, many more people I know suddenly get it, gee I wonder why
fuckin' sucks, man
at this point i am just resigned to the fact that the rest of my life is just going to be spent at home, at work (alone in my lab), walking between the two with an N95 on, and grocery shopping in a P100
repeat repeat repeat
and despite how much this sucks im still at least lucky enough to not have to share space at work
