Akira Toriyama might single-handedly be the most responsible for me even wanting to draw. When I was a kid what made me want to draw initially were two things - Sonic The Hedgehog and Dragon Ball. A tale very much echoed by a lot of us who grew up in the 90s at that time I’m sure. But when you look at those two things you realize that Sonic itself had a heavy dose of Toriyama influence, in a way that really permeates through a lot of other highly influential media as I grew up (without even realizing it).

From there as I got older, his work was always a constant. I got into his other works beyond just my love for Dragon Ball, Sand Land is imo one of the best comics ever made.

My sadness is immeasurable at this news. I am not usually so bothered by the passing of a cultural icon, it doesn’t hit me to my core.

But this one has hurt a lot.

It’s weird imagining a world now where one of my heroes is no longer present, but I will always try to do my best in the honour of his spirit of work. I’ll always be a lifelong fan no matter what. For as much as there is a heavy heart now, I’ll fill it with all the loving memories of enjoyment I’ve gotten from the things he has made.

Thank you so much Akira Toriyama, thank you thank you thank you and may you rest in peace.
