heading into the studio next weekend so need to actually practice drums everyday. goals:

  • internalize correct brush patterns
  • consistent swing tempo at dotted quarter = 80 without tightening wrist muscles
  • develop consistent snare hit tone between snare hits (this band is sometimes loud, so i sometimes hit the drums with the hard part of the brush)

the treat for itself is a $5 lightbulb chain as a sizzler! never used one before, and was not going to spend $12 on a glorified lightbulb chain.

in reply to @lys's post:

kinda also wanna go on a shopping spree for new snarehead / mute / brushes just to get the tone just right, but i also know the engineer is just gonna make it sound like whatever he feels like so

LOL i remember the first time i went into a studio and guy just protools'd a totally different snare sample on top and i was like oh... .... ok....?

(to be fair my snare tuning didnt sound much better at the time but)

I KNOW RIGHT. when i heard the engineer for my buddy's record had just copypasted in an ideal snare tone over all the snare hits, it was such a disillusionment moment. if you don't mind, do you tune just by ear or use a tool?
