Nuclear requires a level of attention to potential downsides that humanity has repeatedly proven itself completely incapable of, especially in the energy sphere. When the oil industry needed to stave off disaster with the Deepwater Horizon leak, they fell back on their emergency plans for the scenario - the ones they were federally mandated to put in place - and it was a 4-page memo someone wrote to file 2 decades ago collecting dust ever since. They never gave it a second thought, and regulators never held them to account for that, because we all have a bias toward thinking the status quo will simply continue. They had to improvise the entire operation to plug the well, and it's dumb luck that they managed to plug it instead of blowing a new hole so big it could never be plugged. That's what scaled nuclear is up against, and in an environment with the brain drain of decades of scaling in the other direction. It is not impossible, but I have great reservations about humanity's ability to make it work.
