alyssa kai & dead girls - shadows of the cape (demo)
shadows of the cape (demo)
alyssa kai & dead girls
00:00

final time: 1hr35min. i'm still very sick but wanted to make something. compo's not really built for singer-songwriter stuff, but i had fun all the same. lyrics:

i wake up and gasp, they won't let me move
my muscles are screaming the ocean is blue
i'm heaving and low, head down on the sand
one hour til i'm dead back and back one with the land
maybe i wanted this, maybe that's true
but certainly, suddenly somewhere i see you
in the cool shallows of the cape
you came for me there

you come with a cloth, you dab me with foam
you talk just a little, you tell me of home
you're bright and arrayed, the wind on your face
i can't understand you but i can relate
maybe i'm the cold, maybe you're the sun
but even i'm the last gasp of the last place i came from
in the cool shallows of the cape
you stayed with me there

maybe we're lost, maybe for good
maybe we're can't bear what we once withstood
maybe no comfort can keep us around
maybe the water will wear us both down
and yes i am hungry, harangued and impaired
but you and i are lying here breathing the sea air
in the cool shallows of the cape
you cared for me there

in reply to @lys's post:

thanks! the vision is being stranded on a beach (in a whale sense) and then someone comes up and helps you out, and i don't think what i came up with fully circumscribed that. but i'm glad some of the feeling -- "man this sucks but i really am grateful for your kindness" -- reached you

oughhhhhhhhh what a banger.. the DIRGE of it all i love that haunting heartbreaking half-step drop at the end of each phrase, but then the refrain comes in with such a beautiful variation/escape from the lowness of the rest. this is awesome thank u for sharing

ah gosh this is beautiful. you wrote so much so quick too; i'm really slow at lyric writing lol so it boggles my mind. this is just a whole lovely, thoughtful song. i feel like the tone reminds me of jordaan mason? i super love this sort of thing, i've spent a lot of time in my life exploring and digging singer-songwriter type acoustic music
