This game's presentation is more thoughtful, rich, and thorough than most, even this team's other game on my list MONSTER SLIDER. I love the story, the garbage blocks, the sound design (however doinky woinky it may be). They clearly put some thought into enemy AI's that reflect their character (like Bunny's frog stacking!). The calligraphic style gathers all elements into a wondrous fairy tale. Unfortunately: omnidirectional match-3 sucks. No way around it. The shared piece preview is just weird; i can't see it being truly a competitive element in high-level play. Yes, clearing chests with the bubbles adds garbage to your combo, which offsets the numbing tiny placements. But it's just wrong. It's just wrong and not good. I have to give a lot of points for how gorgeous this is, but i think it's gameplay fails to cohere. 6.0/10

a full playthrough of the game can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3z3I8yY6ys. art of me by Minasheep! (minasheep on cohost, itch, twitch, and patreon.) next up is № 46: Toryumon (1994, Sega). i hope you'll join us!

they might be exorcists, but at least they don't love the cops. hey wa-- also, we visit an Okama bar, we get some awoos in, and i experience the most block-dropping-joy since Pochi and Nyaa. streamed 4/26/23

hi! i'm doing a stream and youtube series called Walternate Saga 7: Arcade Apocalypse Ochimonogatari, covering ochimono games (arcade puzzle stackers) released on arcade machines between 1987 and 2004. we'll be playing through 118 games reverse-chronologically every wednesday for the rest of the year (at least)! you can follow along @ https://twitch.tv/bedsores

my thoughts: i gotta blame the character powers, which were unimaginative, and the lack of garbage cancelling, which is necessary to create offence and defense, preventing this game from being a perfect 10. but GOSH what a good time! Monster Slider is a tour-de-force, of clear vision and crafy execution. its design kernel is brilliantly simple, building off of Columns-style combo design to some truly big-brained-bonkers-nonsense. i felt, once again, while playing a puzzle game, the feeling of flight. super excited for Kokountouzai Eto Monogatari, by the same devs, and to check out the Saturn version on my own terms! as long as i can play as Katherine the Skeleton Man, the perfect 10 is automatic, believe me.
