Looking at the proposals—from literal adults and political professionals, even—for blitz primaries and game show political conventions has me increasingly convinced Americans are just no longer capable of running a modern democratic society. Like, we do not have the right skills, education, information environment, or underlying worldview.
The one thing that gives me hope is, paradoxically, the fact that we are completely unmoored. Anyone who thinks they know what will happen in the next few months is kidding themselves. Absolutely anything is possible, and that includes good things...
But that does require us to actually work for good things, using any levers of power at our disposal, including the boring ones (including, yes, voting, and even more importantly the other electoral political activities that go with it). The left has to stop demanding someone else ("the Democrats," or "the people") do all the work.
I forget who said this—I'm pretty sure it's not an original observation—but not wanting to do the work is also the impetus behind the weird blitz primary fantasies. Centrist Dems want to make the poll numbers go up by swapping out Biden for a magic guy, so they don't have to campaign.
