I never really understood why so many people were so upset when youtube removed dislikes. like, they were right? having a public social score meter is just not a functional way of conveying anything useful. what information is that supposed to convey to the viewer, "a lot of people disliked this" doesn't mean anything if you don't know who disliked it or why. like, there is already the comment section if you want other people's opinions about the video. dislike hate campaigns are the only unique purpose that public dislikes serve, and so many people were pointing out "yeah but the creators of the video can still see them!" I don't believe that dislike campaigns will actually happen when they're functionally shouting into the void with no visual feedback that it's working.

I don't even think it's true by the way, at least not anymore. I've uploaded youtube videos, and scanning the youtube studio app as well as the regular youtube app I actually for the life of me cannot find a dislike count anywhere, it exclusively shows me like counts.

either way I know people enjoy being mad at corporations whenever the opportunity arises and that's cool and all but whomever it was that worked at youtube absolutely made the right call in my opinion.

in reply to @macrocheira's post:

the only really valid point i remember people bringing up at the time was that a bad like/dislike ratio on informational or instructional videos could be a clue that there was something wrong with them. But that was always of kind of limited use because, as you mention, there are a lot of reasons people would dislike videos.

i agree with @two, that was the main reason people were pissed off about it, people were also just mad at youtube for a lot of different things at that time i think so that just contributed to the aura of "youtube isn't listening to anyone". but it was so long ago i can't remember what specifically people were mad about other than rewind lol

also if you hover over the like/dislike bar on youtube studio it shows you dislike counts, might only be on desktop tho

edit: in the yt studio app if you go to the engagement section of a video and tap the likes vs. dislikes section it shows you the dislikes
