Thinking about how people remember beige computers as making lots of little noises and being pretty loud overall, but for most such computers if you upgrade to an SSD they become quieter than many current year builds and way easier to get completely silent from there
yeah hey speaking of that, y;all know that sound that computers used to make when they flash that light that's labelled with a cylinder? I don't know if it's actually called the hard drive activity light or not but i remember it being that, and when Things were Happening in the computer, that light would flash and something in the tower would click. Together. Really quickly.
does anyone know what the hell made that sound
it was the hard drive! the thing is that hard drives used to be way bigger, hence the Tall Cylinder that was used as the icon for a lot of HDD activity lights, and ofc because hard drives are spinning discs with a weird gay little magnet that floats above the platters, the head moving around would make that click.
unfortunately hard drives made in modern times are better at sound dampening so when they’re active they’re much less satisfying and much more just like a rumble.
when i go from a machine with an ssd to a machine with a spinning disk though, i definitely suffer with the increased io latency
