I have a lot of freelance audio friends, and I’d say the vast majority of them are struggling to find work right now.

It’s not just game audio people either. I’ve heard the same from friends who primarily work in film, who primarily work in TV, who primarily work in podcasts. And it’s all caused by the same shit: executives being greedy, studios only caring about making money for the shareholders.

Like… this can’t last forever, right? It has to get better eventually, probably? This doesn’t feel sustainable. Or at least this is what I keep telling myself, because imagining this is just the path that things are headed on now is way, way too bleak.

I’ve mentioned this before, but I was working steadily last year for a game studio. Then the game I was working on for them suddenly got canceled back in October, and my gigs have been small and sporadic since then. Better than nothing, absolutely! But if I weren’t in the privileged position of being married to someone with a stable job, I’d be in trouble.

I’ve started browsing day jobs a bit out of curiosity and wow, those are bleak too. Like hey, what if we paid you 1/4 of what you made as a music implementer to get yelled at by customers on the phone all day? Aghh

I do have some potentially very exciting composing things coming up in the next few months, but I’ve learned not to let myself count my chickens before they’re hatched. So right now I’m working on a tiny little composing job, applying to stuff, working on my side project Divinuet, trying to go to local events and whatnot, and just… waiting.

I don’t really know what the point of me posting this is! I guess just know that if you’re also struggling, you’re not alone. Times are tough, but I have to believe that they’ll get better.
