"Love, you have to hit control-D."
I sit in silence.
"Elise, please."
I sit, still. I sit on my hands. I sit on my hands and stare down at the keyboard.
"Elise, it's the only way I–"
"I know," I say, voice awkward and round from the tears that hover around the corner. "The only way you'll get some sleep."
Now it's her turn to sit in silence. I can see the curious eyes watching me from the screen out of the corner of my own. There is no pleading in them, and I feel all the worse for it.
"Elise."
"But when I start the program again, you won't remember today."
That expression softens into a slight smile. "It was a good day, love."
