Most of these were SO corny but they were charming and nostalgic to watch. I did genuinely enjoy this one featuring my favorite song from the OST but I admit I’m biased because I was always a big supporter of Saki/Maria and the song is by Maria’s VA. My god though there were so many from 10+ years ago featuring stuff like Radioactive or that fucking Bring Me the Horizon song that’s in every tiktok, I couldn’t even watch all the way through. It was a different time! We were different people!

Absolutely!! It's interesting (still) to me that the first episode was not just flats for the animated pieces (people, mostly) but actually was shaded and somewhere within that first episode, it suddenly becomes flats. But what's interesting to me is that I kind of believe the lack of dimension aids the story. Couldn't say why, just feels right.

That’s such an interesting observation, I completely agree. I think it suited the show especially well because it is a true science fiction piece rather than an anime with science fiction elements. It has a very cold, sometimes detached and impersonal vibe which I think was carried over from the novel.

It was a good example of something this show did a lot of which was to take the constraints they were under due to SAO sucking up all of their money and turn them into effective and intentional artistic choices instead of weaknesses.

I’m about to follow this post up with a link to an amazing long-form blogpost on the series that I read a while back, you may enjoy it!

This is a good way of describing it (very cold, sometimes detached and impersonal vibe) that I agree with a lot. I don't often read manga or novels/LNs (compared to how much anime I watch/have watched 😩) so I didn't even know it WAS a novel until your comment, literally. LOL But good to know and maybe I will read it someday! It does seem like the kind of story that'd work well as a novel so it makes sense it was one originally.

Yeah, I don't think I've seen another show get budget-cut but have it add to its story before the same way Shin Sekai Yori managed to make it work. Which is why it has stuck with me all these years.

(running now to the add-on post...)

Isn’t that interesting? It makes me wish more novels were adapted to the format. As a science fiction reader I remember the first time I watched it I was so impressed at how seriously it took its world compared to a lot of other anime where it was mostly an aesthetic, so the origin made a lot of sense! It is a good novel, worth the read for sure if you have time.

There were a couple episodes where I think the production was clearly strained to its breaking point and some suspect storyboarding decisions were made (you will definitely know which ones if you rewatch), but all in all I think it was an extremely successful work that really turned adversity to its advantage as you said!

And no worries at all, I completely get it and I’m the same way a lot of the time. Feel free to reply to stuff when you have the energy or not at all, I do not take that sort of thing personally haha
