I've been reading HP fanfic fairly consistently lately and part of me wishes I'd never stopped so I'd be more In The Know of good fanfiction but the rest of me with an actual brain is relieved I moved onto other things for several years so I didn't end up an utter Potterhead with the creator the way she is. Imagine yourself being so loyal to a franchise and a person who's so completely evil. Terrifying version of events.

We used to have normalized whump. We used to be able to write Snape specifically rolling his eyes back undergoing some sickening shit and people would go "kyaaaa >3<". The fic economy is in shambles. Now everything has to be wholesome and consensual. 😒

I didn't use to read Snape-whump so I wouldn't know, to be honest. And I think a decent amount of stuff I'm coming across is actually older fic or "older-coded" (in the style of that silly "minor-coded" tweet people like to use) and has that aura of like... my bishounens are so deeply in love and everything is peachy and wonderful. Deviantart slightly-more-than-stickpeople drawings and swooning type of vibe. Does this describe what I mean. Do you get it. I hope so.

I do get it. I really do. I guess that is the other side of older type fic where everyone has to be a specific type of pretty so they can fuck. Or I guess I have to say "make love" to keep it that type of saccharine nonsense. WRONG!!! Sickening!!!

No... I haven't explained, I think. I mean the type of fanart and fanfic that is so extremely OOC that the characters just LOOK like who they are but their behavior is entirely unlike them. And it's saccharine. The attractiveness of them doesn't really matter.

No no, yeah, I did type "pretty" but I think what I meant more was "palatable"? But I get it. But this extremely scrubbed dynamic, or a specific dynamic so devoid of conflict that there's basically nothing there. Which is um... Why bother then lol.

I'm realizing that maybe agegap is a key component to the kind of visceral feeling in my head when confronted with these older fanworks, as well as the feeling as though they're probably done by someone who's young. Like, they feel juvenile, and they have an immature understanding and presentation of relationships. It lacks the kind of nuance and complexity someone gets from actually having those kinds of relationships or witnessing them around their person. So the combination of those things is really jarring, because it's presented as "entirely normal" in the older-time fandom sensibility which is devoid of like, really thinking about- and realizing agegap for what it is at all. I think maybe fanworks with similar-aged pairings might have this feeling for me sometimes too, but it's kind of rare. Obviously I don't want to post any art that conjures that sort of feeling because I don't want to make fun of people.

ANYWAY VERY LONG TANGENT. But yes! I think some of the fic I'm coming across is just like, made before the time of thinking about things more darkly. Although I think some of it is new(ish) but just happens to still evoke this energy (and is also written by adults, bafflingly). 32 year old virgin Voldemort. Losing my mind over here.

At the point of writing such a character at 32 as being a virgin, the writer is just constructing a potentially different type of power dynamic. If you're going to insist on something that unlikely and silly, you should probably lean into it and make it properly fucked up and horny. But evidently not!
I've happened across it on FF.net and newer big fandoms on Ao3 where the fandom is, in general, younger, but to see it come from an adult is uh... Well it's a little alarming!

The idea of like, newly-adult Snape or teenaged Snape pressuring virgin Voldemort into sex is so fucking hilarious to me because it's so unlikely but it's also kind of horny?! FKJSDHLJS Thanks for that. But yeah I really doubt anyone is writing that.

Yeah, it's not something I expect to see from HP fandom these days! And yet!!!!

I mean more specifically something about Voldemort being excessively divorced from physicality that it kind of comes to a boiling point of exerting a type of power over someone in an incredibly precarious situation. It's scary! Could probably be really horny in the right hands. Although I think the dynamic you described is way hotter, just not really applicable with these two like at all.

Moreover (thinking about this) I understand that fic, for some, maintains a degree of literary wish fulfillment for some people. Erotic fic in particular is typically enjoyed more frequently and more loudly when it delivers in being hot for the reader, but that also has to be felt through the writer. I'm not trying to suggest that people who write Voldemort as a 32-year old virgin are themselves 32-year old virgins, but I feel like if you are going to write such a thing, you are obligated to want to fuck the virgin a little bit to make it good. Am I making any sense. Can anyone hear me.
