This post has content warnings for: rape, mention of mention of it basically. i'm not talking about but i link to somewhere that does, underage character fanservice.

I've been thinking for some time on this and I guess my answer would be Steins;Gate. Spoilers for an old popular anime, I guess. I know it's popular for a reason, and I liked the grungy sci-fi elements, but I dropped it around episode 17 or so. That was when it was revealed that the woman one of the main characters was creeping on until this point was his daughter time-traveling from the future, and they tried to make this a wholesome reveal while not unpacking any of the father's previous behavior. I lost my patience at that point, but I do wish the compelling plot was led by awkward nerd protagonists who were actually awkward nerds and not just creepy jerks towards women.

Oh wow, this is a very strong endorsement AND counter-endorsement. Stuff like this is always so interesting to me where the actual script and story is really moving but the fanservice trappings are so repellent that it makes it impossible to recommend. I’m going to look for more blogs about this one for sure, thank you for providing that LJ link!

it's an interesting show to talk about because it IS really good but it's also REALLY BAD. if it just didn't have that stuff, i think it'd be pretty solid, because i can't remember any devastating issues with pacing or writing. like maybe some stuff isn't explained very well or at all but i expect that from shows targeted towards kids/teens. (it's also a difficult series to be sure of on this because i do really have to turn off my brain for it skfhdlfks). one of the things i like about it though is like pseudo-plurality because manatsu (greenhair girl) is a different version of ichika in some way. a trope i like a lot!
