the actual second birthday is tomorrow (2/3) and eggbug’s birthday is sunday (2/4) but we’re celebrating today! because it’s a work day! you can read the longer thing we wrote for our 1st birthday last year.

we launched in private alpha on February 3, 2022, and ramped up to around 150 users before our public launch on June 28, 2022. one more year down!

only one new thing this week (we have multiple big projects in motion right now):

  • added Tag Recommendations to the post composer
    • you probably noticed this one, it’s pretty visible
    • right now, we show your pinned tags (which you can edit from your page settings!) and your most recently used tags
    • if you have suggestions for other tag types to show, let us know!
      • note, though, that we’ve already considered “site-wide trending/popular tags recently” and aren’t doing it on purpose. history on twitter and elsewhere shows that it’s a laborious, error-prone process to tune this for picking up on trends properly in the first place, not having them disappear while the event is still broadly topical, and not being a massive spam/harassment vector.

ok, let’s talk big projects:

obviously, tipping is going on in the background. we’d decided internally to make some staffing changes there (jae and colin are going to switch places, so jae will return to cohost development and colin will switch over to tipping and subscriptions). we’d started this transition process on monday, but it’s currently delayed by a more urgent Major Project (i think that’s a good way of referring to it) suddenly popping up on tuesday, namely:

jae is currently in the middle of a very sudden, short-timeframe move from their home in Florida (three guesses as to why) and is, as a result, somewhat distracted from work. they expect to be fully back in the office on the 26th, but are working intermittently until then. we’re planning to have the dev swap done by the week of the 19th. unfortunately, things happen and we have to roll with them. they’re not thrilled about the whole “being forced out of their hometown by genocidal fascists” thing but you do what you gotta to survive.

in the meantime, colin’s working on being able to add attachments to the middle of posts without the hacks that have been traditionally required. there’s some infrastructure work around post storage and display needed — to undo simplifying assumptions we made in the past — but it’s what’s happening!

oh also we have a date for the eggbug plush, it’s very soon. unfortunately we couldn’t quite make it happen in time for his birthday but you won’t have to wait too long.

that’s all for this week! thanks, as always, for using cohost! another year older, likely not another year wiser. :eggbug:

in reply to @staff's post:

I was not able to find a "thank you for the website and I hope you safely escape from the fascists!" card at the grocery store but I want you to know I still mean it. Good luck out there.

Thank you for two years! Hard to believe it's two years of fourth website being in my life, but I'm grateful for it every single day.

HEROES

PLEASE please PLEASE PLEASE please please please please remove the arbitrary "top 15 most used" restriction from pinned tags!!! the things i want to pin are specifically the things I don't talk about all the time!! And now that pinned tags have a bonus extra function, I really even extra more want to put my least-frequently-used tags there, because those are the ones that would be useful to have suggested in the composer!! And also just what benefit does that restriction provide in the first place? If you want to cap the number of pinned tags just do that! aughgugh!

For anyone who also wants this to change, there is an open ticket about it here.

Love the new tag feature! It's already coming in handy.

My sincerest sympathy and well-wishes to jae! This country really needs to get its shit together and oust these fascist lunatics...

Sorry about Florida. Hope the move goes well...

But also thank goodness for officially supported mid-post attachments! I wonder if the restriction to four attachments (if you're not inlining images from elsewhere) per post would be a good candidate for a Cohost Plus benefit.

Good luck with the move Jae :( & thank you to everyone on staff for the work you do for this site! Happy birthday cohost and eggbug :)

I was curious how the public API release was going? Back in november y'all said it would hopefully be soon, is this still the case? no worries if not I'm just excited for it :o

I think what might be nifty is if there was some way to share tag suggestion lists between friends. Maybe something I could export as a JSON an just send to a friend.

Another great thing (though probably a bigger ask) would be to have a way to put little symbols next to suggestions. Main usage case: I'd want to be able to have folks share a list of tag suggestions that are all marked with a warning flag to warn me that some groups may find them triggering.

The internet moves super fast, I'm sure everyone has used a tag without understanding that the tag may be hurtful to some folks who see it. Personally, I wouldn't recommend you guys take care of the issue directly as it would be a huge pain the ass. But if you made it so that we could have little icons next to some tag suggestions and if we could share those lists with others...we could simply source it ourselves.
