God I followed so many webcomics. I read Sluggy Freelance. The Adventures of Dr. McNinja. Dominic Deegan. I remember when Axe Cop started and was actually kind of funny. I remember when Order of the Stick had fewer than 100 comics. Erfworld, before the Tragic Events. I remember when Topato was just a character in Wigu instead of the mascot for a mini merch empire. I remember thinking how cool it would be when Cucumber Quest got all the way to the end. Like tears in the rain...
i'm always amazed that sluggy freelance is still going. i miss a robust webcomics scene, it really feels like the combo of social media and mobile killed it, or at least made it much harder
WebToon and Tapas bear a lot of the blame - for centralizing a LOT of new webcomic output under their apps, for bamboozling a generation of younger creators into thinking that their unsustainable output demands are the norm, and for forcing said creators to optimize their comics for mobile vertical-scroll format. I have a longpost I wanna write that's basically begging webcomic creators to start making their own websites again because those apps are so poisonous
haha, i almost EXPLICITLY called out tapas but i wasn't sure if it was the only one or even the primary one-- every new webcomic i see on there is a tragedy, both for the reasons you mention AND because its just a garbage experience to read from!
i just finished spacetrawler and added it to my rss feeds, so now i'm reading Anna Galactic
