looking at the plot description for the movie 'The Money Pit' and its so funny how for like two decades every mainstream american movie was about how hard it was to have money and stability
Recently, I fell into a discussion about how there's a niche genre that emerged in the 80s where the call to action for the protagonists is "impossible financial pressure." I have no idea how many movies fall into this category, but the first examples I could think of were The Blues Brothers (save the church) and Elvira Mistress of the Dark (gets sexually harassed, loses her job, needs seed money to start her Las Vegas show).
I'm sure there are countless others that follow this pattern. Some large sum of money being owed, suddenly and without warning, forces the protags on an adventure to raise money somehow, any way possible.
