ways i think the internet could be fixed:

  1. nationalize everything (probably the most realistic solution even if it will never happen in the US. i suspect that whichever country figures this out first will probably eat our lunch once they do tho)

  2. drastically scale back the internet. i’m talking like usenet, bbs level shit. i’m talking no more video streaming, no more free image hosting. i’m talking you have to start going to the bank and the store and calling people on the phone. everything has to be something that a single server admin could run for a nominal fee (i think this is actually the outcome that is mostly likely to come to pass regardless)

  3. subsidize everything according to need and age like insurance, and then it inevitably collapses anyway bc that doesn’t actually fix the problem just kicks the can down the road

  4. revolution

EDIT: oh i guess the other option is that the internet just becomes another super stratified class thing. idk if i’d count this as fixing it but if it just becomes a straight up luxury even in so-called developed nations, that would also probably solve a bunch of the current problems

Nationalizing I think would be the most likely thing to solve the capital problem of hosting sites and such. Also, here in the US when Twitter was handing out its ban of far right wing people, the conversation of "is social media like a town square, where the right to free speech shouldn't be impeded?" And, I think, currently the answer to that is no given all these companies are companies, and the Freedom of Speech is just saying the Government can't stop your free speech.

So the solution, if we want a platform that everyone can talk on without being inhibited, would be for the Government to make a social media site. But here in the US, I doubt that would ever fly given peoples inherent distrust in our Government.

Just... idk, tiring that there doesn't seem to be a good solution to a lot of these problems.
