a funny thing about emulation is that it proliferated save states as a feature, which i never used? which apparently makes me 'hardcore' even tho its literally just playing most games they way they would've been played on release? like not intentionally i just never knew how to use them growing up so i never did and now i found out that's apparently kinda weird

yeah i really never used them , arguably they're just user defined checkpoints but they don't feel right a lot of the time. although for a game that's just packed with filler random encounter like megaman battle network, i enjoyed really overusing them to just keep moving through the map without as many pauses lol

This is total speculation, but it's probably a relic of when emulators were a lot less stable. Save anywhere is a lot more useful when the emulator might just crash for reasons outside your control.
