Episode 108: Here Comes the Snake Shop!/Maruko Can't Stop Drinking Amazake!

Some travelling snake handlers pass through town and put on a demonstration of the numerous snakes in their care, which thrills Maruko to no end. Then, Maruko discovers that you can actually get too much of a good thing when she starts gorging herself on amazake, a low-alcohol sweet drink made from the byproducts of sake production.

Notes:

Another episode, another haiku from Grandpa. These will start becoming more commonplace as they start making them an integral part of his character. Luckily, they're actually quite fun to do! The only snag thus far is that he often refers to Maruko as "his grandchild" in the haikus, and well, let's just say that "grandchild" is a bit complicated when it comes to the ol' syllable count. I mean, to me, there's three, but every syllable site lists as two unless "child" is deliberately enunciated. As such, while "grandchild" would be the preferred term for me to use, I can only foresee people yelling at me no matter how many syllables I decide it's going to be.

Episode 15: Finally, Maruo and the Class Election!

Maruko and another classmate find themselves nominated in the upcoming election for class representative. This sets them at odds with the incumbents, Maruo and Migiwa, who are desperate to maintain their positions of so-called power.

Notes:

The great re-release train continues. I estimate I redid about 70% of the lines in this episode, mostly because of awkward phrasing and to hew closer to the character voices I settled on further down the line. Indeed, though, there were some pretty bad translation errors which can be chalked up to me not understanding what the heck was being said.

One error I didn't have the heart to get rid of. When Hanawa is dunking on Maruo near the end of the episode and walks away with a wave, he says, 「じゃあ、失敬ベイビー」which literally reads something like "Hey, I'm being rude baby", but actually has a meaning of "Well, I'm off now, baby!". The original translation of the line was "All rudeness intended, baby!" since this just followed a section where Hanawa was firmly putting Maruo in his place, and it could be nicely gleaned from the more literal gloss. Still, this was not technically correct. I just couldn't bring myself to change it, however -- it just fit in way too nicely with the scene!
